Dennett and Searle on Consciousness: Relevance for Robot Construction

چکیده

This paper contrasts Searle's theory of consciousness with Dennett's. It draws from material in Searle's book \The Rediscovery of the Mind" Searle, 1992] and his article Minds, Brains, and Programs Searle, 1980], and Dennett's book \Consciousness Explained." Dennett, 1991] The paper focuses on issues that are relevant to the design of intelligent robot systems such as Cog. In particular, it discusses whether the question \Is this artifact conscious?" is even important to ask in the context of research on intelligent robot systems. Finding that it is, we examine Searle's arguments that suggest it is impossible to build a conscious robot, and some of Dennett's responses to these.

Consciousness: Drinking from the Firehose of Experience∗ (revised and expanded)

The problem of consciousness has captured the imagination of philosophers, neuroscientists, and the general public, but has received little attention within AI. However, concepts from robotics and computer vision hold great promise to account for the major aspects of the phenomenon of consciousness, including philosophically problematical aspects such as the vividness of qualia, the first-perso...

Consciousness and Understanding in the Chinese Room

In this paper I submit that the “Chinese room” argument rests on the assumption that understanding a sentence necessarily implies being conscious of its content. However, this assumption can be challenged by showing that two notions of consciousness come into play, one to be found in AI, the other in Searle’s argument, and that the former is an essential condition for the notion used by Searle....

Artificial Intelligence and Consciousness

Consciousness is only marginally relevant to artificial intelligence (AI), because to most researchers in the field other problems seem more pressing. However, there have been proposals for how consciousness would be accounted for in a complete computational theory of the mind, from theorists such as Dennett, Hofstadter, McCarthy, McDermott, Minsky, Perlis, Sloman, and Smith. One can extract fr...

The Hard Problems of Consciousness – What exactly is the problem ? From Logical Paradoxes to Constructivism

What is it like for you to be you? This question has long fascinated philosophers and has sparked many heated discussions. At the first conference Towards a Science of Consciousness in 1994 in Tucson, Arizona, philosopher David Chalmers coined the Easy and Hard Problems of Consciousness. While the Easy Problem concerns the mechanics of nerves and the brain, the Hard Problem is concerned with is...
